‘Swift, handsome, roomy, quiet’: Australia’s motoring press on Volvo’s EX90

It’s pretty safe to say Australia’s automotive experts like Volvo’s new flagship seven-seat SUV. Some of them really, really like it.

Volvo EX90

“Safe, handsome, roomy, quiet and fun to drive: it’s easy to mount an argument that the EX90 isn’t just the best electric seven-seat SUV you can buy right now, but perhaps the best premium SUV full stop, regardless of whether it’s powered by petrol, diesel or electricity.”

Suffice to say NRMA Open Road managing editor, Alex Inwood, is a fan of Volvo’s new top-of-the-range EX90.

He’s not the only one. Australia’s motoring press got their hands on the flagship all electric SUV a few weeks ago – and they like the cut of its jib.

“For those who do want a plug-in powered family-friendly large luxury SUV … there may be none better on the market in Australia,” writes News.com.au's Matt Campbell. “That’s because the EX90 is the consummate Volvo experience – plush, refined, comfortable, practical, and safe. It just happens to be fully electric.”

“It’s a fantastic car to drive, and the price point also stands out as being rather good value for what you’re getting,” per Exhaust Notes’ Patrick Jackson.

“Very suave, yet in a cool and understated way. The interior fit and finish, and material quality is superb, with great ergonomics and more than enough features and gadgets to keep everyone happy,” reckons Driving Enthusiast’s Brett Davis.

“It’s priced appropriately for a luxury model in this class, and it is easily one of the safest and most comfortable propositions available.”

Russh’s Mia Steiber is also a fan. “With its speed and 2.2 tonne towing capacity, the EX90 serves as a teachable moment for anyone who sneered that electric cars would ‘kill the weekend’,” she writes. “It's fast. It does 0-100km in 4.9 seconds … Quiet as a whisper, it feels at odds to be driving a car so fast yet so silent … The braking abilities of the car are noticeably smoother than just about any other car I've driven.”

Likewise Baby Drive’s Trace Clifford: “It feels smooth and effortless to drive and much smaller than most large seven-seat SUVs. The visibility is good too … You get all the lovely benefits of it being an EV like sitting with the air-con running while your child naps in the back or you've got the best parking space and you're waiting at school pick up! All without burning through fuel and polluting the local environment.”

“With impressive tech, a luxurious cabin, a well-balanced ride and minimal Scandinavian design, it could be one of Volvo’s winning products in 2025,” according to Riz Akhtar at The Driven.

“One of the most important features in any EV is its ability to do one-pedal driving and Volvo has nailed it on this car,” he adds. “On the drive along the highway, the safety system was performing all the key tasks without the annoying bings and bongs you hear in some of the other cars.”

“If Volvo’s aim was to have the XC90 pass the baton to the EX90 in its shift to full electrification, it has done a darn good job at moulding the excellent formula laid down by the XC90 for the EV age,” writes Car Expert’s James Wong. “It showcases everything the brand has to offer without compromising on its core values.”

Gay Car Boys’ Alan Zurvas is mightily impressed.

“The Volvo EX90 is more than just one of the best large electric SUVs I’ve driven. It’s a masterstroke of engineering, design, and technology. It blends performance, luxury, and safety in a way that feels effortless. There are no interruptions, no gimmicks – just a vehicle that excels in every area.

“If you’re looking for an electric SUV that offers more than just a driving experience, but rather a moment of serenity, power, and the future of mobility, the Volvo EX90 is your ride. It doesn’t just do everything well – it does everything exceptionally.”
